Disturbing the Silence

Disturbing the SilenceDisturbing the SilenceDisturbing the Silence

North Carolina's first nonprofit dedicated solely to women veterans in crisis, serving over 2,000 women since 2008.

When she served, no one asked if she was okay. We do.

The Woman Behind the Mission

Patricia Harris founded WVSS in 2008 after witnessing firsthand the gaps in care for women veterans — women who had served their country and returned home to silence, instability, and unmet need.

As a veteran herself, Patricia built WVSS from the ground up into North Carolina's first and only women veteran-focused nonprofit. Today, she continues to lead the organization's crisis response, advocacy, and community partnerships.

Her commitment is personal. Her results are documented.

WVSS Heart
The support you provide Veterans is greatly appreciated.

Our Mission

Women veterans face homelessness, domestic violence, sexual assault, PTSD, and trauma recovery, often in silence, and often alone. WVSS exists to end that silence.

We provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, benefits navigation, trauma support, and employment pathways, all specifically designed for women who served. We are the only organization in the Triangle area that accepts women veterans with children.

Founded in 2008 by Patricia Harris, WVSS has been a lifeline when the system falls short.

Our Vision

WVSS will provide a beacon of hope to women veterans in crisis, and that through our services at the Women Veterans Crisis and Support Center (WVCSC) in Durham, together with our education and advocacy efforts, these women and their families will have their dignity restored, and will be empowered to take positive steps to move forward in their lives.
